I was just sitting around and decided to see what was on CBS, the one channel I get in clearly since I don’t have cable. (and by the way I refuse to have now because I won’t support all the dam ‘omni’ commercials!) I regress, the show on was ‘Kid Nation.’ I’ve heard a little about this show, a group of kids ranging in ages are left to their own devices to run a town. Tonight’s topic was food. They were supplied with all kinds of canned beans and veggies and a hen house full of chickens. The council members read from a book left by a past pioneer which I guess leads to the topic of the episode. This chapter entry mentioned the kids had a choice whether or not to eat the chickens! Ok what the fuck? I was really surprised at this. First of all I don’t know if they would have thought of this on their own because they didn’t see the chickens as food until it was suggested. Second I was extremely disturbed at the reasoning for some of the kids wanting to kill the chickens, they needed ‘protein’! I am so sick over the fact that my taxes go to schools that don’t even teach kids the entire truth, such as beans provide protein!! It is just so frustrating. One kid did mention that vegetarians don’t eat chicken and are fine, but another kid said that was because vegetarians have things like tofu which they, the kids, did not. For a brief moment I had a proud feeling when three of the kids flat out refused to kill the chickens. One girl said she would go home if they did and locked herself in the hen house along with 2 other kids. Unfortunately this didn’t hold up. The other kids were able to persuade and convince these 3 courageous kids into going along with killing the chickens. Which I can only assume they did, because a discretionary warning came on as the kids were marching proudly wearing aprons and ready to murder, at which point I could watch no longer. I am so sickened by this display. Why don’t people wake up and see what they are turning their kids into? It makes me feel totally hopeless in my fight to better the world. Why am I trying to save something that no one else cares about? Fortunately for the animals they are my main concern and I will continue my stand to protect them at all costs. It’s just scary to see who our future leaders are… easily persuaded, nonthinkers. I’m trying to save the planet why they continue to destroy it.
{Wednesday, September 26, 2007} Kid Nation, a bunch of bull
i just found this on google, so i had to respond. i found this episode so disturbing. completely upsetting. it’s not what they did, it’s who did it. innocent little children killing, and being prodded on to do this by some producers. i thought it was a cute show before, i thought the children were adorable, and then after seeing them cut the chicken’s head off, they looked like little monsters to me. and it’s not their fault. it’s horrible what these adults did to them. it’s like they took away their innocence. i am so digusted by cbs and the people who made this show, i don’t know what to do, but stay up googling things and writing on people’s blogs…. you can read more, i posted more stuff and people have responded on http://www.veganmyspace.com –
whoever you are – i completely agree with you and thank you for writing today
are you serious with this? come on…people eat meat and have since the fall of man. its completely natural to kill an animal for the intention of ingesting it. those kids were not torturing the chickens. i am one of the biggest animal lovers and activists i know (next to my sister) but even i think you and anyone agreeing with you are out of line. i cant imagine being that sensitive and living in the world we do…i would go crazy. however, i must agree with you that it is sad to see that the kids really thought that their only source of protein had to come from a chicken. kids these days are getting smarter all right…but in all the wrong ways. what disturbed me more than anything on this show is the attitudes of some of the kids…i really wish i could have a word with their parents.
To Not afraid…
I am awestruck at the idea of anyone considering them selves and animal activist or even animal lover yet still eating animals. I guess I shouldn’t find it that surprising because I was raised eating meat, and loving animals. Its so sad though that we are told and dictated which animals we are supposed to care for and which we are not. Just because everyone else thinks something is true doesn’t mean it is, meaning what does it matter how long people have been eating meat? We also use to have slaves, and women didn’t have rights, should we go back to that because that’s how it was before? No. As we grow and evolve as a culture we have to evaluate all actions and consider the effects they have. Do you realize many cultures around the world are vegetarian? Not eating animals isn’t some bizarre new concept. I don’t fell having compassion for animals and understanding that given the choice they would chose to live is being sensitive. Don’t you think it’s extremely hypocritical as an animal advocate to pick and choose which animals you deem worthy of protection and which may suffer for your pleasure of eating them?
