Cellular abuse, the epitome of rudeness; cell phone over-users. I hate to say it, no, actually I don’t, most likely if you own a cell phone you over use it. I know I did, which is not to say the events I describe happen to everyone, but they do happen, a lot. I have several reasons for foregoing the little luxury, but rudeness is number one. Just the other day I was shopping with a family member, who shall remain nameless, who committed one of the rudest acts we’re coming to accept. As she was checking out she answered her cell. We all do it, our phone rings so we answer it, but why? Why cant we first complete our transaction, and then return the call? How many of these calls that we must take are actually dire? Most likely, zero. Its so rude on so many levels. First of all to the cashier trying to attend to you politely. She doesn’t want to be rude by interrupting your call, but she has to do her job by completing her transaction and continuing with the next customer. Second, you are being rude to the person calling by not giving them your full attention. And third you are holding up the line being rude to the other customers wanting to make their purchase and complete their transaction.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think its ridiculously rude to carry on a personal conversation, on the phone, in public, usually about absolutely nothing, while someone else is trying to communicate with you in person.

And as far as driving and talking- this simply is just not safe! There are so many things to be looking out for while driving, adding a cell phone to the equation can be disastrous. In fact I think my car insurance should be lowered because I do not own a cell phone! I have actually driven places whole on the phone only to arrive and have no recollection of how I go there. There have been countless times I’ve locked my keys in my car, or forgot where I parked, due to the fact I was talking on my phone and not paying attention to anything else. And I know this has happened to everyone at least once. Texting and driving is another huge problem. I’ve been in one accident- and guess what, I was texting!

Not only is texting dangerous while driving I find is monumentally rude as well. There’s nothing I hate more than being with someone, trying to have a conversation, who is constantly diverting their attention to have another conversation with someone through texting. Other than being a safety issue, and a personal foe-pa, ever stop to think what texting is doing to our communication ability? Ever see the movie Idiocracy? At first I found it appalling then I realized it was because of how true the movie paints out future. No one could speak in full sentences. They mostly grunted and threw in a few syllables. The use of texting has created a whole new language through the need for short hand. I’ve read various articles about future generations not being able to put together a presentable resume due to this never mind conduct a face to face interview.

Ok, if all that isn’t reason enough to put down the phone, what about the future negative effects cell phones may be having on our health? I remember a few years ago, ok like 7, there were stories about cell phone antennas being linked to causing some kind of brain cancer. Who knows the long time effect this will have on us? 20, 30, 40 years from now are we going to sue the cell phone companies like we do the tobacco industry? Due to our own laziness to actually think about what were doing rather than just trust a company designed merely to make a profit?

Ok, I’m almost done, I swear. Lastly, what about the cell phone towers? Ever consider what they may be doing to our environment? I’ve seen studies that link the inactivity of bees to interference with cell phone towers. The towers seem to be causing some kind of retardation among the bees causing them to become disoriented and unable to pollinate. Do you have any idea what would happen if the world didn’t have bees? They’re not here merely for us to abuse and steal their sweet nectar, honey. They have a big job to do, pollinate the world. Without bees we wouldn’t only lose flowers, they pollinate trees as well. And where does fruit come form?? Trees! Bees are responsible for continual growth of our fruits and veggies.

I don’t expect anyone to give up their cell phones after reading this- these just are my reasons for doing so. However do us all a favor by being a little more courteous when in public. I don’t live my life by what if’s, such as what if this call damages my brain, because what if it doesn’t? Just something to think about. I just feel having a cell phone is a convince I can do without for now. I actually love the freedom it’s given me. I like when I talk with people now I know I can give them my undivided attention.

I really can understand your anger. I experienced something like your friend – with two little differences: 1. I was the cashier and 2. the woman who wanted to pay used a headset which was invisible under her hair.
She came in smiling and laughing a little and I tried to talk to her, asking what had happened and so on. It was so embarrassing when finally I realized that all the time she had not listened to me – she went out and let me feel like the biggest fool on earth.
I would never do this – even it was “only” a student working “only” at a petrol station…
Anyway, I’m really curious what will there be in 30 years, if cell phones really do not harm our brain (like scientiest recently “found out” – maybe sponsored by some provider)…

I know exactly what you mean. once upon a time I did some cashiering so I can sympathize. student or not no one deserves to be treated this way. and I hate to admit it but I’m sure I’ve been that rude customer more than once, but I’m trying to learn form the error of my ways…

Julia says:

Of course no one deserves to be treated like that, that’s why I wrote “only” ;)
But wah! It just happened again this friday. I was at the nearby supermarket to buy some food and the lady who was just paying made a call at the same time. But at least she said “thank you” and “goodbye” to the cashier… Maybe today you should be thankful for that …
